KAREN COGSWELL

Growing up in Manhattan Beach, Karen fled north as soon as she could to attend the University of California at Santa Cruz. She completed her degree in English and Education at San Francisco State University with Summa Cum Laude honors. Fortunately for the mortgage industry, there was a pronounced lack of teaching jobs when Karen graduated, so she took an administrative job with a stock brokerage firm in San Francisco. The financial world fascinated her, so Karen studied economics and passed her Series 7 Securities Exam in 1979. She spent a total of 10 years in the stock brokerage field, 7 of them at Morgan Stanley. But Santa Cruz proved irresistible to Karen, and she returned in 1987 and was hired at Santa Cruz Mortgage. After 9 years, armed only with her knowledge and a borrowed IBM electric, Karen started Network Mortgage by herself. Today the company has 14 loan officers and a staff of 4-- not bad for a liberal arts major! Karen's philosophy of "Doing Well by Doing Good" is fully supported by everyone at Network Mortgage, and the business is looked upon as one of the pillars of the philanthropic community around the Monterey Bay.
