During busy and daunting times, such as tax season, it can be difficult to keep your stress levels under control. It can be a challenge to balance the demands of everyday life with the need to set aside extra time for filing your taxes and ensuring that everything is documented properly. To help you stay on track this tax season, we are sharing 5 tips to help control your stress levels and get your taxes filed on time:
When you start to feel overwhelmed, take a few minutes to meditate. When meditating, close your eyes and focus on your breath. As you breathe out, let all your stress go and clear your thoughts. If any negative thoughts or stress triggers enter your head, push them out with your next exhale. With a renewed focus, you will be able to finish your paperwork with a clear head.
Unplug from Technology
The constant buzzing and beeping from your cellphone can easily distract you from the task at hand and add unneeded stress. Although it seems we are all programmed to not let our phones out of sight and immediately respond to any texts or calls, try turning off your phone or leaving it in another room. This will prevent potential stress triggers and allow you to focus, minimizing the time it will take you to complete the task.
We aren’t suggesting you go out and run 5 miles, but a nice walk around the block or some quick stretching can help relieve stress and release endorphins. Sitting down and staring at a computer for long periods of time can easily put you in a slump. Take a few minutes, move around a bit and return to your desk feeling refreshed.
Set milestones and reward yourself with a break when you accomplish a goal. This will give you a plan to follow and being able to see progress will keep you on track. For example, once you’ve organized your pile of receipts, take a moment to step away from the computer and paperwork before moving on to the next task. Take a few minutes for yourself – whether that means reading a few pages of a magazine or returning a quick phone call. A brief break from your taxes can revive your focus and leave you ready to tackle the next task.
Listen to Music
Soothing music has been known to help lower blood pressure, heart rate, anxiety and stress hormone levels. If relaxing tunes don’t do it for you, crank up the volume to your favorite album and sing your heart out. Listen to whatever music works for you and makes you feel at ease. It’s easier to accomplish difficult tasks when you have a clear mindset.
